Michigan Students Hold Girls-Only Prom to Accommodate Different Cultures, Set Excellent Example

American teenagers generally look forward to their high school proms, if, for any reason, to spend a night in a fancy dress for once. But mostly, because many see it as your standard teenage rite of passage. And while some are not interested in going to the prom, there are some who have been dreaming about it since they heard it was going to happen — but had a feeling they couldn’t go or wouldn’t go for a variety of reasons. In the case of Tharima Ahmed of Hamtramck High School in Michigan, her Muslim religious beliefs forbade her from dancing with or dating boys; her everyday life — without dancing — requires her and other Muslim girls to wear a headscarf in the presence of males. So, your regular prom was not a possibility for her. Then she had a brilliant idea: throw a girls-only prom where she and others could (literally) let her hair down, or just attend a prom without a date. A girls-only prom with the theme “Once Upon a Dream.”

Essay: Supporting A Daughter’s Love for Superheroines (While Wishing There Were More of Them)

It all started with She-Ra. I was strolling through Target and I saw The Princess of Power on DVD. I thought my daughter might get a kick out of the ’80s cartoon I grew up on. So I grabbed the story of He-Man’s twin sister and introduced my daughter to a whole world of girls who save the day and fight the forces of evil.

So began my four-year-old daughter Brenna‘s love affair with superheroes and my education about a whole world of storylines and characters that I would soon become intimately familiar with.

We moved on to Justice League cartoons and movies, some of which seemed a little too adult for my pre-schooler. But she just wanted a show with as many girls as possible. Sure, she loved The Flash and Martian Manhunter, but she needed more Hawk Girls. Younger shows, like the Super Hero Squad, were exciting but left her a little frustrated.

This 14-Year-Old Girl Will Build Her Own Car In Time For Her 16th Birthday, Thankyouverymuch

Meet Kathryn! Her last name is unknown because she’s generally only known on Pennock’s Fiero Forum as user Michhiker’s daughter. The family lives in Michigan, Mount Pleasant to be exact, and since the age of 12, Kathryn has shown a strong interest in cars. Well, a strong interest in buying and restoring her own Pontiac Fiero. By herself. Yeah, Kathryn isn’t interested in having Mommy and Daddy buy her a car for her 16th birthday — she’s going to go ahead and build one. Oh, kids and their crazy hobbies!

Meet Frankie and Dottie! They are the new spokespersons for KRAFT as they begin their campaign to spread the joy and goodness of their classic Mac & Cheese. And if you thought you were scared of your parents texting, wait until you hear this: KRAFT will be handing all of their social media — YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook — over to this macaroni-loving duo, who say they’ve been enjoying the very product they’re advertising for the past 75 years. See? This is what loyalty gets you.

And speaking of old woman taking over social media, Betty White has joined Twitter! Not an April Fool’s joke that was delayed because I couldn’t find my glasses.

Monday Cute: This Weekends Super Best Friends Forever Short with Batgirl and Poison Ivy

Another month, another of Lauren Faust‘s Super Best Friends Forever shorts, this one featuring a lot of gifts for the obsessive Batman fan, most of them in Barbara Gordon’s bedroom, which features two pieces of Batman wall art, three villain action figures (one of which is, I believe the Scarecrow in the style of The Batman Adventures) a Bat-mite plush and a Batman-head-shaped head board.

And also Commissioner Gordon and Poison Ivy!

“Tech Girls Rock” Initiative Launched At Boys & Girls Club To Inspire Young Women To STEM

We already know there’s a serious lack of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers but at least we’re not the only ones actively campaigning to interest young girls in that particular life path. The Boys & Girls Club recently hosted an event called “Tech Girls Rock” to show girls just how fun tech can be and that yes indeed, tech girls do rock.

Can I Attend This Russian Military School For Girl Soldiers?

I don’t know about you, but growing up watching shows like Xena, La Femme Nikita, and Buffy made me yearn to be a badass. If only there were someplace I could learn how to do that. There is. In Russia. Photographer Sergey Kozmin was allowed into the Moscow Female Cadet Boarding School No. 9 to show the students at their everyday activities: dancing, exercise, and firearms class.
