Our First Looks At Gotham‘s Penguin and James Gordon, Agents of SHIELD‘s Deathlok

I know he’s all evil and all, but damn, I am digging the sartorial groove of Gotham‘s pre-Penguin Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor. I would wear those clothes, unironically and without reservation. James Gordon’s (Ben MacKenzie) duds are much less stand-out, which fits with his character, I guess. You can see that behind the cut, plus our first glimpses at Gotham‘s Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) and Agents of SHIELD‘s J. August Richards, Deathlok incarnation. I wasn’t aware AoSHIELD was a Saturday morning cartoon.

Olympics Update: Meredith Vieira Becomes the First Female Host of NBC’s Olympics Coverage

And it only took an eye infection so bad that an anchor became temporarily blind. Bob Costas, NBC’s long time host of their prime time Olympics coverage, has unfortunately come down with a pretty extreme eye infection just in time for the beginning of this year’s games. As long as he could still read notes and sit in a bright room, he was game to continue the job, but for the past three days, Matt Lauer has filled in. The Olympics and The Today Show make a pretty demanding schedule for Lauer, so starting tonight, NBC anchor Meredith Vieira will be filling in until Costas can make it back from sick leave. This will make her the first woman to ever host NBC’s primetime Olympics coverage solo.

But that’s not the only thing that’s happened since our last Olympics update:

In Which President Obama Name-Checked Mad Men While Talking About Equal Pay For U.S. Women

Last night’s State of the Union was very much like the Academy Awards. People were honored, people were bored, camera operators got a workout trying to find the right people in the audience. Just swap the political and pop-culture references (one or two political mentions at the Oscars vs. one or two pop-culture items at SOTU). Check out this relevant clip from President Obama’s SOTU last night then hit the jump to look at a depressing image of how many Congressmen stood up for this part of the speech.

Check Out This Petition To Help Women Race In The Tour De France

In professional cycling, the most prominant competition may be the Tour de France, in which men compete over multiple stages and terrains, over the course of about three weeks, to determine a victor. A group of female professional cyclists and triathaletes, Emma Pooley, Kathryn Bertine, Marianne Vos, and Chrissie Wellington, now want to challenge the inequality that has plagued the sport of cycling by opening up the Tour de France to female cyclists, addressing the issue in a very public manner. Pooley, Bertine, Vos, and Wellington are asking those who support their cause to sign their petition on Change.org urging the organizers of the Tour de France to create another aspect of the Tour de France for women, a

professional field running in conjunction with the men’s event, at the same time, over the same distances, on the same days, with modifications in start/finish times so neither gender’s race interferes with the other.

Check Out The Trailer For WADJDA,The First Saudi Arabian Movie Directed by A Woman

The first movie ever to be directed by a woman in Saudi Arabia, WADJDA tells the story of a young girl named Wadjda and her quest to purchase a bicycle by winning a school Quran memorization competition.  If the trailer above is any indication, the movie will be a funny and emotional look into women’s lives in a country where the topic is not very often broached in media, and seems to have a bright, witty young girl in the lead. In an interview with Al Jezeera, the director, Haifaa Al-Mansour, described her ability to explore women’s lives in Saudi Arabia, saying,

I really didn’t want people to say ‘Because she’s a woman, she’s only talking about woman’s issues.’ But when I did my documentary and it was about women, I was amazed about how it touched lots of women…It’s like an area that people don’t have a chance to get into, especially in Saudi Arabia. It’s difficult for a male filmmaker to break into this secluded world and have the same opportunities I had.

Speed Sisters Shows Us The Middle East’s First Female Car Racing Team

The documentary Speed Sisters from SocDoc Studios gives us a look at the lives of Noor, Mona, Maysoon, Betty, and Marah, the five women who make up the Middle East’s first female car racing team.  Watch as they cooly drift and race through obstacles on the road, discuss societal expectations and racing, and navigate their lives.
I’m looking forward to this documentary. It focuses on five amazing women pursuing their passion and living their lives in an area that we usually see through conflict, and all five women look like truly hardcore, awesome ladies.
