Red was a solidly enjoyable action comedy that was only enhanced by the fact that it offered a middle aged or older actress a chain gun and a romance in the same story. Frankly, I’m not expecting much from the sequel other than that it have explosions, witty banter, Helen Mirren, and Bruce Willis looking like he just sucked a lemon… but I believe it will deliver, and deliver admirably.

Thanks to Empire Magazine we have a slew of new Man of Steel pics, and while most of them are kind of blah (they’re behind the cut if you want to judge for yourself), this one in particular, of the baddie Faora (Antje Traue) making an epic “Oh, really?” face at General Zod, caught my eye. It’s official: I love her. There’s no going back for me now.

April 13th was another historic night for women’s mixed martial arts. In only the second women’s fight in the history of what is arguably considered the premier MMA promotion in the world, Cat Zingano and Miesha Tate fought for the right to become one of the first two women to coach a group of male and female fighters on the upcoming season of the UFC’s reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. In addition to the coaching assignment, the winner would get to face the other TUF coach, champion Ronda Rousey, for the women’s 135 pound belt.

It’s become clear this week that now that Fox has actually decided to license merchandise based on the ten year old television series with a massive cult following that might actually have lasted more than a season if they hadn’t heavily interfered with it’s scheduling, episode order, and air dates… they’re going start taking shots at the smaller, unlicensed retailers that have been serving the market niche they’ve been ignoring. This has left a lot of folks pretty angry.

ThinkGeek, a, well, nerdy stuff retailer with really savvy social media presence, is one of the outlets that carries Fox’s now official Jayne Hat, one of the most recognizable pieces of clothing in the series. And they’ve announced, in the wake of Fox’s cease and desists to Etsy Users, to donate all profits they make from the sales of Fox’s Jayne Hats to Can’t Stop the Serenity.

As if Firefly fans didn’t hate Fox enough already, it seems a newly licenced Jayne Cobb hat has started a chain reaction of cease and desist notices to Browncoats who make them for fun. Gorram… 

I can’t decide whether to go for the Han Solo reference or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reference. This story has broken my brain.

I’m interested in the putative The Sixth Gun adaptation for a number of reasons. I mean, the fact that it’s a paranormal western featuring fantasy tropes from the undead to the mythical thunderbirds doesn’t hurt it much. But it also prominently features a young female character with what promises to be a hero’s journey of a story arc from farm girl to gunslinger. Laura Ramsey has been tapped to fill that lead role of Becky Montcrief, who winds up allying herself with shifty gunslinger Drake Sinclair and his friend Bill John O’Henry for protection and help putting the terrible secrets and powers of the Six guns to rest.

Naturally, any good western has its unambiguously evil gunslingers as well, and one of them, Missy Hume, “widow” of the undead General Oliander Bedford Hume, was cast this week.

Oni Press’ The Sixth Gun concerns the adventures of a few good heroes and six pistols that grant mysterious powers upon the gunslingers whose lives in which they entwine themselves. But nobody’s lining up to form a six-man superhero team here: the Six are deadly, magical, mysterious weapons with subtle minds of their own and their owners wind up fighting the guns’ curse as often as those who would kill them to obtain them. And then, you know, there are undead Confederate generals, flesh-eating plagues, thunderbirds, train robberies, and more ghosts than you can shake a trap at.

NBC is currently producing a pilot for a putative television series based on Brian Hurtt and Cullen Bunn‘s comic series, and Laura Ramsey will be taking the lead role of Becky Montcrief.

60 Minutes reporter Steve Kroft learned the hard way not to question Dame Maggie Smith. Which is problematic considering they were conducting an interview. Watch as she reveals she’s never actually watched the popular British drama she stars in and Kroft’s attempt to almost scold her on it. BIG mistake.
