This Superhero Fan Made Her Own Comic Book Dress

Last week we brought you a collection of superhero fashion. They included some Avengers-inspired sketches, a comic strip dress, and some high-fashion Kirby-like designs but one of our readers created her own dress that’s almost like a combination of the three. Read on for some details on her creation she put together especially for Free Comic Book Day, including where she found that fabulous print!

Mixed-Media Artist Nina Katchadourian Uses the Airplane Bathroom For Inspiration

Artist Nina Katchadourian, who works in pretty much every medium you can imagine (video, photography, paper, sound, etc.), found herself inspired by an environment that can elicit feelings anywhere from claustrophobia to the weirdly frisky: the airplane lavatory. Using the materials at her disposal — pun not intended, and then totally intended — witness Katchadourian’s photographic experiment entitled “Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style.” I’m going to make a wild prediction and say that “lavatorying” has serious meme potential.

Mad Men As an Interactive 8-Bit Video Game [Video]

The Hunger Games isn’t the only big deal this weekend: Tonight marks the return of AMC‘s Mad Men after a 17-month absence. While it’s not exactly part of traditional geekdom, The Fine Brothers (with help from artist Levi Buffum aka Doctor Octoroc) shoehorned it in by turning it into an interactive 8-bit video game with three alternate endings. I don’t know what’s better: the silly text, the “Choose Your Own Adventure” nature of the game, or the chiptune theme song. Trying to pick my favorite part is like asking Don Draper to be a one-woman man. Oh, that cad! Is that a martini? Glug, glug, glug…

Feminist Frequency Puts the Oscars to the Bechdel Test [Video]

So, we’ve got one more week until the Oscar telecast, and that gives us yet another week of people trying to handicap the possible winners. But goodness or badness of the movies aside, how do they stack up when it comes to how women are portrayed? Feminist Frequency asked this question and have put the Best Picture nominees to the Bechdel Test: Two women, with names, talking to each other, but not about men. You’ll find that this year’s nominees … will disappoint you. At least when it comes to this. They’re obviously not “bad movies,” but Hollywood clearly has some work to do when it comes to telling quality stories about women.

Beautiful Zelda Tapestry Cross-Stitched in Stop Motion

So, earlier this week my roommate finally gave me the motivation to, by voicing an affirmative desire for, starting to put together a cheery cross stitch sampler (bordered by curling vines and fruit) of Cave Johnson’s Combustible Lemons rant from Portal 2. Which lead me to r/crossstitch, which lead me to Sprite Stitch, which lead me to a forum thread on how to use free software called KG Chart to turn .jpgs into cross-stitch patterns, featuring this very pattern.

Naturally, I was delighted not only to see today that somebody had actually made it (Redditor Notpodell‘s wife), but that they’d done us the good turn of making it into that internet video crack cocaine: the time-lapse video. You can take a look at a bit of the the pattern below the jump.

The Periodic Table of Cupcakes Probably Involved Some Sodium, Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen

And that‘s just the partial chemical content of salt and baking powder. These cupcakes were created for a reception at somebody’s chemical engineering department. Dibs on Polonium, it’s got my name in it!

Wider shots of how the table was laid out (on the table) below:

Gingerbread We Saw Today

It started with just a picture or two, suitable for inclusion in our usual link roundup, but then it became a trend. An all-consuming, inevitable trend of candy, icing, and spices. First, this TARDIG (Time And Relative Dimension In Gingerbread) is from Geeks are Sexy.

A Little Dinner Music: Skyrim For Piano, Violin, and Voice

Youtubers Lara and ViolinTay used the magic of the internet to put together this duet (with Lara’s voice).

Hopefully this is a lovely perk to your evening, and not a sudden reminder that you’ve had to talk to family all day instead of playing Skyrim.

Hopefully.
