Amanda Age 30: We Should All Be Ashamed of 2013

Editor’s Note: as 2013 drew to a close, we asked contributing writer Amanda LaPergola to sum the year’s geekiest highlights in an entertaining and timely fashion.  We emphasized the timely part for her benefit.  That was almost two months ago.  It is now nearly the end of January, and Amanda still won’t answer any of our texts.

However, this morning a mysterious package arrived at Mary Sue headquarters.  Its contents included what appeared to be a note from Amanda’s mom (“Dear Miss Sue: Please excuse my daughter’s tardiness.  She has recently begun The Master Cleanse, and every time she goes near paper, she tries to eat it.”) and the following pages…

Disney Did Themselves No Favors With The New Maleficent Trailer

Folks were already concerned about Maleficent coming out too sympathetic in the upcoming film of the same name starring Angelina Jolie. After all, she’s one badass witch, and that’s why everyone loves her. The first trailer for the Disney live-action film came off super creepy (although Rebecca dared it to do better). And that was a good thing in my opinion, but now this has happened. And by “this” I mean, DEAR GOD WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? Watch and see what you think. We get some new, interesting, looks at the film but the overall effect is pretty terrible.

Whoopi Goldberg Went To NYCC And Talked To Everyone But Us [VIDEO]

Ok, I’m exaggerating but Whoopi Goldberg visited New York Comic Con last weekend and talked with tons of people we know! Too bad we didn’t know she’d be there or we could have saved her a spot in our “Representation in Geek Media” panel room. Perhaps she could have taken a few tips from our creator panel considering she was at NYCC trying to gauge interest in her comic book idea. The video gives a really positive look at geek culture and the event as a whole, which is nice to see, but hit us up next time, Whoopie. The Mary Sue ladies would love to sit down with The View crew and talk about women and pop-culture!

Finding Comic-Con International’s Harassment Policy

Harassment in the geek sphere has been a hot topic as of late. Whether it comes anonymously over the internet or in person, harassment is something many are finally looking to put a stop to, or at the very least, create consequences for, in our community. So when we personally witnessed something we felt fell squarely in this category and looked into how we could put an end to it, why did we find a roadblock?

Tumblr Cracks Down On Adult Content, Suffers An Unrelated Security Breach. Karma?

It’s not been a great day for Tumblr. First there’s a “security vulnerability” in their iOS apps that put their users’ passwords at risk. Second, they’re facing backlash over a new policy toward adult content.

Rick Moranis Talks About Ghostbusters 3, Hates On Ghostbusters 2

“I haven’t talked to [Dan Aykroyd] about it. Somebody he’s associated with called me and I said, ‘I wouldn’t not do it, but it’s got to be good.’ You know, I’m not interested in doing anything I’ve already done, and I thought the second one was a disappointment. But I guess I’m interested in where that guy is now. I sort of see him as being Bernie Madoff’s cellmate in jail. Both of them being so orderly that they race to get up and make their beds.” – Actor Rick Moranis speaking exclusively with Empire Magazine about Ghostbusters 3 from his perspective.

The comedic actor has actually been retired from the life for quite a while but recently released a musical comedy album. Not too long ago, we had what seems like the most concrete Ghostbusters 3 news yet from Aykroyd. “We need four new ghostbusters,” he said. “It’s based upon new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University.”

For the record, I’m not the only one who loves Ghostbusters 2, right?
