The Dark Knight Rises Tickets Are Getting Scalped Like It Was A Concert

As a younger Batman fan, I had a number of friends who were not so much excited to see Batman Begins, as excited to see me see Batman Begins, and then hear me gush in the car about it at two-thirty in the morning afterward. The summer after I graduated from college, when my best friend and I shared an apartment and a streak of joblessness, we deliberately made room in our tight budgets for only two summer movies: Hellboy 2 and a midnight showing of The Dark Knight.

Tonight, I am not going to see The Dark Knight Rises, because I have to get up tomorrow morning and do my job, and I’d rather do it on a good night’s sleep. Part of me is a little sad about this; the surest sign that I am a grownup now than anything else. Most of me is really looking forward to that sleep. I just want you all to appreciate it when those posts show up tomorrow.

Wait, this post was supposed to be about TDKR tickets? Right, right. Okay. Here we go.

Always There To Defend: New Sailor Moon Anime To Debut In 2013

In 1992, the celebrated Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon anime debuted in Japan, capturing the hearts of thousands of young fans. The series would eventually explode across the globe, resulting in five major story arcs, stage musicals, live action series, and countless pieces of iconic merchandise (after all, who didn’t want their own sailor outfit?). We shared in the excitement of their battles and victories, we laughed at their antics, we sang that catchy theme song, and we definitely envied their cat. Now, twenty later, creator Naoko Takeuchi has announced that we don’t have to put away our plastic moon scepters just yet–the series will return with a new anime debuting in the summer of 2013.

Every Voiceover Actor in Geekdom Reads Star Wars [Video]

Get as ready as you can be for this, because you will never be prepared for the overwhelming geekitude you are about to witness. Several voiceover actors — the people who have voiced almost literally every cartoon you’ve ever watched — got together at Emerald City Comic Con to read Star Wars Trilogy: The Radio Play. Kevin Conroy (who is Batman) read stage directions while Billy West, Tara Strong, Maurice LaMarche, John DiMaggio, Jess Harnell, and Rob Paulsen read the various other roles as the cartoon characters they’ve voiced in the past.

This lasts nearly an hour and a half. You will want to squeeze this into your schedule after wiping your brain parts off the walls — because your mind is probably already blown.

Karen Gillan Talks About Her Love For Community’s Doctor Who Spoof, Inspector Spacetime

You remember when the NBC show Community spoofed the BBC’s Doctor Who with their show within a show called Inspector Spacetime? First it got popular enough to have a web series (not affiliated with NBC) made. Then the hopeful creators of that webs series got sued by NBC. But, as Community lives on (for the time being), so does Inspector Spacetime and it turns out one Doctor Who star is a big fan. The BBC recently chatted with Karen Gillan just before she filmed her last episode of the long-running sci-fi show, and the actress described how she came to find out about Inspector Spacetime and even hinted at wanting them to hire her. The BBC thinks it’s a delightful idea and is trying to start a campaign with the hashtag #AmyMeetsAbed. Now watch Gillan being completely adorable in this video.

Next-to-Normal-girl: Tumblr’s Overnight Fandom

Creamsicle by cosmickonett.tumblr.com Ah, Tumblr, land of possibility. Where large fandoms become generational phenomenons, and unlikely smaller ones explode into supernovas of animated gifs. And where, if you’re a misunderstood satire that initially garners a bevvy of outraged responses, you can spawn a full-fledged internet meme-turned-actual fandom in less than 24 hours.

It all started when Tumblr user beekkake [intermittently NSFW], perhaps in response to recent sexist trends across the internet (such as these takes on the female audience for The Avengers), decided to mock the “me v/s THAT WHORE” dichotomy that pop culture, even geek culture, expects girls to participate in and perpetuate.

In other words, using proper tumblrspeak, she made a cute picture that got taken out of context with amazing results.

7 New Actors Join Disney’s Maleficent, One Is Rita Skeeter, Another Is Dolores Umbridge

All we needed in a Maleficent film was for Angelina Jolie to play the evil queen. We got that, so everything else after is just candy. Well, the new casting announcements make it feel like Halloween! Six new cast members have been added to the Disney production, among them Imelda Staunton and Miranda Richardson. Yup, Dolores Umbridge and Rita Skeeter from Harry Potter! Can you guess who they’ll be playing?

Happy Star Wars Day! …and Avengers Day! …and Almost-Free-Comic-Book-Day Day!

Ahh, May 4th, christened Star Wars Day because of its homonymic qualities in common with the phrase “may the force.” The one day of the year when the Avengers comes out and then we all get free comic books. While I can’t be entirely certain that this is the geekiest weekend of the year, seeing as how we’re still waiting on two more superhero bockbusters this summer, and eventually, you know, part one of The Hobbit is going to come out just shy of the Mayan Apocalypse… I think this weekend, with its confluence of Star Wars Day, the (American) Avengers release, and Free Comic Book Day, is pretty high in the running.

Lets start the excitement right here.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The Dark Knight Rises‘ Third Trailer

Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to The Avengers. I love the fanbase that’s risen around it and its creative contributions to my daily life on the internet. I’ve generally enjoyed all of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe outings to the theater, even if the individual films might not have been the most, ah, hallowed additions to the genre of superhero movies (Iron Man 2 and Thor, I’m looking at you and giving you a comforting pat on the shoulder). At the bare minimum I’m expecting a fun ride out of The Avengers, and if early reviews are a good indication, I’m going to get that and more.

But the part of me that is a Batman fan first and foremost among all of my other geek interests wants everybody else to shut up because there’s a Batman movie coming out. That part of me has somehow decided that the reason we haven’t had a media blitz for The Dark Knight Rises yet is because of The Avengers. I know, it’s petty jealousy, but what are you gonna do?

Watch the following trailer, I guess.

Doctor Whooves: The Doctor Who/My Little Pony Cross-Over

We’ve seen Lauren Faust’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic mashed-up with a few of our fandoms previously. For instance, Scott Pilgrim, The Dark Knight, and Game of Thrones. We’ve also seen a few fan-made clips of the Doctor from Doctor Who as a pony and the David Tennant look-a-like has even made a few cameo appearances on the actual show (his cutie mark is an hour glass). But now…oh, now we have a whole episode featuring Doctor Whooves and his trusty companion. Hungry for more? Check out these My Little Pony figures done up like the cast of the famous sci-fi show while you’re waiting for episode 2 to premiere in a few months. Or, as YouTuber ocarinaplaya suggests, make a usable intro for the Doctor Whooves show (there were some rights issues)!
