Jean-Max Morris Recalls Being Told “You Can’t Have a Female Character in Games”

“We had some [prospective publishers] that said, ‘Well, we don’t want to publish it because that’s not going to succeed. You can’t have a female character in games. It has to be a male character, simple as that.’ …We wanted to be able to tease on Nilin’s private life, and that means for instance, at one point, we wanted a scene where she was kissing a guy,” Morris said. “We had people tell us, ‘You can’t make a dude like the player kiss another dude in the game, that’s going to feel awkward.’ I’m like, ‘If you think like that, there’s no way the medium’s going to mature.’ There’s a level of immersion that you need to be at, but it’s not like your sexual orientation is being questioned by playing a game. I don’t know, that’s extremely weird to me.”Jean-Max Morris, creative director of Remember Me, to The PA Report.

Remember Me is a cyberpunk themed game whose hero Nilin “can “remix” an individual’s memories by hacking into their neural implants as she attempts to reclaim her memories.” Morris talked about the game, and the difficulties it encountered in getting made simply because it had a female player character, with the PA Report. His remarks illustrate, among other things, how misogyny and homophobia are often intertwined.

Gamemaker Siobhan Reddy Featured on BBC’s List of 100 Most Powerful Women in the UK

You’d expect a BBC list of the 100 most powerful women to include crafters of mainstream culture like pop star Adele, internationally bestselling author J.K. Rowling, and, of course, the Queen. But nestled in amongst political figures, business moguls, and Britain’s first openly gay Poet Laureate, there’s a brief description of the career of Siobhan Reddy, a woman who makes video games for a living.

Recognition of the power of women as well as the power of games? Naturally, we approve.

What Will Geeks Make Of The New Roleplaying Game Comedy, Zero Charisma? [VIDEO]

Troll 2 actor and director of Best Worst Movie, a documentary about Troll 2, Michael Paul Stephenson, has produced a South by Southwest comedy entry called Zero Charisma. Directed by Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews, with a script by Matthews, the trailer seems to have a stereotypical view of a game master and his roleplaying crew. But will the film turn into something more? Give it a watch and let us know your first impressions.

The World’s Oldest Twenty-Sided Die Won’t Roll a 20 For You

Because it doesn’t have Arabic numerals on it. io9 hypothesizes that this die (and another in the same collection) that dates from the Ptolemaic Period (that’s roughly between 300 and 30 BC) is the oldest D20 in the world.

So you could role a circle with a little dash in it, or a capital H, P, N, E, B, U, K, I or even a triangle.

But not a 20.
