Cate Blanchett to Star as Cartoonist in HBO Series Cancer Vixen

I'll Allow It

Cancer Vixen is the 2006 autobiographical graphic novel of Marisa Acocella Marchetto, and now (well, soon) it might be an HBO series produced by Trudie Styler, Celine Rattray, and Cate Blanchett, starring Cate Blanchett.

Look, all I’m saying is that it’d be pretty great for television and comics to have a series about the life of a woman who makes them.

Marchetto’s book concerns her two year battle with cancer while uninsured, getting married, seeing her career begin to take off. And apparently, Cate Blanchett’s a big fan. According to Deadline, she and her fellow producers are meeting with writers, so nothing is set in stone yet. However, “the prospect of having the Oscar-winning actress in the lead role makes this a priority project.”

The protagonist is a cartoonist for magazines like The New Yorker and Glamour with a supercharged Manhattan lifestyle who is about to get married but must re-examine her life through wit and her animation when she is diagnosed with breast cancer.

The cartoons in the New Yorker aren’t exactly a nerd bastion, but comics making is, so that’ll be a cool thing to see in a television show that might stand the chance of actually getting seen by a lot of folks. That is, it’s on HBO and it’s got a big name actress in it. And for the moment, that’s making up for the fact that the phrase “supercharged Manhattan lifestyle” makes my eyes roll back in my head.
