It’s time!

Out of the hundreds of incredible applicants we received, ten finalists were chosen by actor Mark Meer, host Emily Expo, and TMS editor Sam Maggs. Once we narrowed it down to those ten, it was up to you, dear readers, to vote for your favorite cosplayer. The winner will receive round-trip flights, accommodation, and VIP passes to Calgary Expo for themselves and a friend, and will also act as a judge in the Expo’s Costume Contest.

The contestants received over 5500 total votes, and this competition was extremely close; the first and second place winner differed by only 3% of the vote. Every single finalist received well over 100 votes each (at least!), and it goes without saying that they are all wildly talented and deserving of all the love they received. We’ll put their relevant deets at the bottom of this post so you can follow them and become a fan for life!

And now, without further adieu, we present the winner of The Mary Sue and Calgary Expo’s Ultimate Cosplay Contest…

…Bronson as Gipsy Danger!

4-480x480

When we asked Bronson why he loves cosplay, he said,

This will sound like a cop out, but what I love about cosplay is everything. I love the imagination. I love the contemplation phase. I love making schematics. […] I love building, seeing it come to life. I love the glue burns. I love it when something doesnt work out quite right and you stay up til three in the morning coming up with a solution. I love the looks I get. I love seeing first time cosplayers at conventions, nervous until they step out the door and see the sea of costumes, and realize this is where they fit in.

Congratulations to Bronson, and a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the contest, from submitting entries to voting to spreading the word online. We here at The Mary Sue and the folks at Calgary Expo are huge supporters of the world of cosplayers; everyone from the super-pros to the terrified beginners deserves to feel great about themselves in costume, and fostering an inclusive, enthusiastic, and respectful atmosphere at conventions and online is of the absolute most importance to us. So thank you!
