Well, if Origins: Wolverine happens in 1985, then that's definitely after First Class. With Stryker having that much authority to experiment on mutants by then, and Emma having been in custody for a short time at the end of First Class, they could go the Cuckoo route with the Weapon program and have the "Emma Silverfox" be a Cuckoo clone of Emma Frost.

If you want Emma in the current time period of X-Men, you have a few options:

1) Have her project a youthful appearance like in Old Man Logan. She'd be about the same age as Charles or Erik. That would potentially give her a more interesting, long-lived, wise, experienced, Grand Dame nefariousness. Can you imagine Hellen Mirren playing an older Emma Frost?! Ahhhhh!

2) She could stay in her diamond form but not be a telepath for fear of aging in an instant to her natural age, like in the alt. universe depiction from Young X-Men's "End of Days" (and similar to her future alternate universe daughter Ruby Summers).

3) You could just say that she has an extended lifespan by alternating between her diamond form, which basically extends her youth and longevity until she shifts out of it and picks up aging normally from when she first shifted to the diamond form. Basically, it's the "cheater" version of option 2. All she'd have to do is spend half the day of every day in diamond form and she'll have reduced her aging by half that of its normal course. Rather than aging 30 years from the events of First Class, she'd only have aged 15. Or theoretically, she could spend even more time in diamond form to slow her aging, even to something like 7.5 years if she spends 3/4ths of her time in diamond form.

Well, neither have the others, really. Emma's earliest age is as a teenager in her flashbacks, and her oldest stated age in current timelines is 27, though how true that is...Plus in Heralds, she states that she's over 25.

Or you can claim that part of Stryker's experiments was cloning powerful mutants for the Weapon X program, with Jean being one they knew about from Xavier's files about the Phoenix personality. When the base flooded, the Jean clone was the one that was discovered, and if that's the case, it could explain her rapid shift in personality upon discovery. There a few options there, too. You could claim that the Phoenix Raptor you see is when Jean released her powers upon embracing the Phoenix in the end of X-2 and that jostled the clone to life (ala the Phoenix Force, Sinister, and Madelyne Pryor) and that's how that clone came to be discovered as Jean.

If the real Jean is discovered later, then she's absolved in largely the way that Jean was absolved by the duplicate retcon when she came back in Fantastic Four.

As for Scott...this is far fetched, but you could have Jean sense Scott's mental presence lingering at Alkali Lake and have Jean be so in tune with her molecular control that she's able to reassemble Scott's atomized body and bring his consciousness back. That would be somewhat similar to Jean sensing Emma's lingering mind amidst the rubble of her diamond form and molecularly fusing her back together. Who knows?

I can see that working reasonably well! There are storylines in various versions of the X-men which incorporate secondary mutations.

If by 'fix' they mean; change it so Rogue didn't give up her powers over insecurity about her boyfriend (I think the fact they filmed that scene both ways and chose that option makes it even worse), Mystique doesn't lose her powers and abandon all her deeply-held socio-political beliefs, and Jean doesn't go psycho the second she gets a modicum of real power? Then yeah, I would love it if they would 'fix' it! :/

...but Cyclops can stay dead! I always found him annoying!
I'm beginning to think there will never be a truly brilliant X-men film. :(

but she doesn't have to be a major villian. everyone just assumed that it was jean that was back. in the original story, when jean was first resurrected, it was the phoenix force who made an exact replica of jean while she was still being repaired from the cosmic radiation. they could easily follow the same story line where someone finds jean fully healed (like the fantastic four did) and she's back. she still has the ability to have phoenix abilities because it was always in her genetic make up to tap into it. the only thing they have to do is resurrect cyclops somehow, but that could be done by sinister i feel like since he's all about them summers and greys. but personally i would like to see jean's reaction to the fact that what she did to save everyone that she loved, ultimately resulted in the death of the man she loved most.

I know. I don't see this working at all - too many character, and too many things to deal with, and too confusing. My prediction is that the movie won't work out at all, and after having trashed the two biggest X-Men storylines Fox will have to unload the rights on someone else.

But I'm not sure if I want the rights to revert to Marvel, given what I hear about what they've been doing with X-Men lately.

I see one major problem: bringing back Phoenix means she has to be a major villain again and almost certainly means she has to be killed off. Can you imagine the same character having a death scene in 3 consecutive movies?

Wolverine just had one of the Stepford Cuckoos laying around. (Emma's been cloned.) The age issues happen in the comics too. Emma hasn't aged since her first appearance in 1980

There are a lot of other elements of the Phoenix Saga that they didn't come close to touching. So we have a strong Jean Grey now and a "Phoenix" force that they think is another personality. The comics has a lot more to say about it. They even rehashed it and spun it a few different ways over the years. Even the original story faced a number of retcons and changes over the years. So they could bring back Jean and do more Phoenix related plots without much problem.

I am glad he fiddled with Wolverine as he did, though. I feel like he added a little Gambit in there, which is great because I loved him. The Wolverine of the comics got boring after a while of "MY EMOTIONS!"

This news actually makes me more worried about the film. From what I've read about the film it seems like Bryan Singer wants to fit everything into one movie, and I'm wondered just how coherrent the final film will be.

I believe the 'shocking' part was the poor direction X3 went in, you know, having a line from a youtube video that wasn't that great, killing/depowering key characters, not so much anything to do with the cure.

'Sides, the X comics are mostly social allegory with a dash of Wolverine. 3 was just a typical action movie for the most part.

Agreed. Considering the limitations of budget and what had already been set up in the first two movies, a 'proper' Phoenix saga was never going to happen. What did happen was edgy and interesting and for the most part not even overly non-reversible. The writers took a reasonably moderate stance on the "cure" issue, showing the pros and cons of it, which was also realistic -- some people actually would want to opt out for various reasons and now they have a choice. Not a politically correct move by current standards (and I'm going to guess this was the part that people were correctly worried Singer would find shocking), considering some of the allegory involved, but still respectful.

1. Emma Silverfox is not Emma Frost.
or
2. She is an older lady projecting a hot teen body.
How are so many people unaware telepaths project what they want?

All we need is for the "old" versions in DOFP to change the continuum and we can forget about X3.

Now how to change the continuity problems with First Class is another problem. HOW old is Emma?! Please stop making Mystique a lovesick outsider - she is Awsome!

This. Really, time-travel gives you a textbook out; just say that the X3 future is the "bad" future that we're trying to erase.

I would miss the loss of X-Men and X2, but if it gets us a more cohesive timeline, I'm all for a soft reboot.

Okay, I'll bite, be the odd geek out...

"Singer's version of 'fixing' X3 would be making it drearier, have less impressive action, and sidelining or forgetting half the cast! Scott having an emotional breakdown and dying in the first twenty minutes was the MOST interesting thing done with him in three movies! I appreciate and respect that Singer didn't just make a feature-length toy commercial a couple of times, but I *like* having an X-Men movie that's NOT just two hours of sitting shiva around a social allegory, with a dash of Wolverine!"

Now, if you'll excuse me, it seems I have some wet copper armor to put on.

Almost all of it is fixable in my mind, without making a new continuity necessarily. We never actually saw what was done to Scott, so lets say she disintegrated him, who's to say that she didn't reintegrate him elsewhere, and nobody knows where. Maybe Jean even did it to protect him, but was never able to assert enough control afterward. So there's Scott.

Jean's been resurrected enough, it won't be too hard to bring her back.

Cure was temporary, so Rogue, Mystique and Magneto all get their powers back.

Bringing back Xavier in his own body is the only one I can't figure out. The end of X3 showed that he had taken over the comatose body he was discussing in the ethics class he was teaching when he first felt Jean, so he's still alive, he would have just no longer been portrayed in Patrick Stewart's body.

Personally, I always envisioned the 'cure' was nothing more than a sham for collecting mutant DNA for the purposes of weaponizing it (thus creating the need for Sentinels when the process went naturally awry) and the temporary power negation was just a side effect.

Well Hollywood is notoriously ageist and Basset was already in her 40's when the first movie came out, so that probably factored in.

You want to fix Xmen? Simple just use the St Elsewhere maneuver, here you go:

Cut to a scene of a little kid staring intently into a snow globe, inside the globe is a model of Xavier's school for gifted students. Then reveal that the kid is Proteus the mutant who can alter reality, but when he snaps out of it everything goes back to where it was at the end of X2. You're welcome.
