Unshot Scene Resolving Rory’s Dad Subplot from Doctor Who Series 7 Will Probably Ruin You

Even if you loved The Angels Take Manhattan, the final Amy and Rory episode of Doctor Who, you’ll probably admit that it would have been nice to see how Rory’s dad found out about his son and daughter-in-law’s fate. He was introduced for the first time earlier in the season and quickly became a fan favorite, not least because of the talent of Mark Williams, familiar to many fans for his role as Arthur Weasley. The clip also answers another question about Amy and Rory… but I’ll just let you watch and find out.

Can an unshot scene be my favorite scene in an episode? Animated sketches and a single voiceover never felt so complete. It gave me the Rory closure I was annoyed I didn’t get, and I’m totally fine with it being left unshot–it is pretty similar to Blink, after all. But…can you imagine if Mark Williams had been allowed to actually get his hands on this?

Love it, not sure what more I could say…

    right in the feels! >_<

Obviously this is incredibly emotional but I can’t help but wonder about Amy’s parents. Their presence (or lack thereof) in series 5 was such a big deal that it seems harsh that they are just forgotten.

What do you mean “probably” ruin me? I love this scene the way it is presented here, but still wish they had filmed it. When Rory was reading the letter, darn if I didn’t start crying as badly as I did during the episode.

    Didn’t see this episode… can’t talk.. crying…

A-fucking-men. Why the hell weren’t we allowed to see Amy with her family? It just reads as lazy, inobservant writing.
Or, y’know, yet another example of Moffat (and he is the showrunner, so he is the one who has the final say) privileging the stories of his male characters over those of his female characters (“Never let him see the damage”, my ass).

I thought they were dead? And that’s why she lived with her aunt?

  • OdinsEye

    Perfect ending.

That was before the Doctor rebooted the universe. They are clearly at her wedding (unlike Rory’s dad) and we never hear about them again.

They should have included it. It would have made the episode more impactful, more meaningful and wouldn’t have been so ambiguous.

Amy’s parents died when she was very young. She lived with an aunt and inherited her house when she died. So Amy had no relatives left to miss her.

Amy had no living relatives to miss her, so no, this wasn’t Moffat priviledging the male’s scenes over the female’s- there were no parents to mourn for their daughter.

wait where did her parents go???

  • http://twitter.com/Sarakenobi Sarakenobi

Amy’s parents were erased but when the Time thing was rebooted they came back – they were at her wedding!

Watch the end of the Big Bang again.

In the original storyline- they were dead. They died when she was little. So maybe after she remembered The Doctor, etc, everything changed back again.
I don’t remember seeing them at their wedding?

her dad went to give a speech when she remembers the Doctor! she freaks out when she wakes up (and the doctor is gone, because he is on the other side of the time crack thing) and she’s like my little dad! my mum! and they are confused why she is so excited because they never left

WHY DIDN’T THEY FILM THIS????? One of the reasons I was upset by the finale was I wanted to know what happened to Brian.

Now this, THIS made me cry.

If Chris Chibnall were only to name the charity, I would happily make a donation in his name as a thank you for this. It effortlessly fixes all the issues anyone had with the end of the episode. I’m flabbergasted that this was left unshot. I demand a DVD extra.

So it wasn’t just offscreen. The Doctor didn’t have the guts to tell Brian.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who was bothered by his lack of appearance in the episode despite all the buildup of his character earlier on.

Well thanks for making me cry on a Monday morning, The Mary Sue….
