Fact From the Vapor of Nuance

Avengers Alternate Opening Is Like the Opening to Avengers 2

Marvel has put this alternate opening scene of The Avengers online for the viewing, as part of its ongoing campaign to get people psyched for the DVD release of the movie (which could have just been accomplished by officially releasing the blooper reel, I mean, come on), and it’s totally understandable that this didn’t make it into the final film. It places the film in an entirely different sort of narrative loop by beginning with the end, and more than that, it’s completely at odds with the tone of the rest of the movie. The Avengers was big, bombastic, optimistic, and blissfully consequence free (aside from a certain S.H.I.E.L.D agent and his friends).

What this scene, chock full of Cobie Smulders, feels more like is the opening scene or the teaser trailer for The Avengers 2, a movie that plays up the tension between Smulders’ Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury, in the lead up to the director being removed from his command just when the world needs him most.

I agree completely. Definitely not the right opening. But sure could make an interesting start to the sequel. And it’s already shot! :-)

All I can think about watching this is that the Avengers are off having shawarma while all that destruction exists

While I generally like dark themes and consequences etc., exploration of the damage superheroes do while protecting normals has been used so many times, from Watchmen to X-Men to The Incredibles. So watching this was a bit meh.

From the names given to the list of deleted scenes, it’s pretty clear that there was a dropped subplot of Maria Hill tattling on Fury so this alternate opening doesn’t surprise me. Of course, IIRC, her whole character was basically created to be anti-superhero.

This reminded me of the major problem I had with The Avengers movie: all that violence and NO bodies, NO blood, NO screaming injured. “All those people died.” Really? Who? Who died? Hollywood shows the Awesome, Badass fight sceens and none of the consequences. This really bothers me. It glamorizes violence.

Interesting fact about the Avengers DVD – it was actually released here in Australia yesterday. I have no idea why – maybe Marvel just likes us? :D
