Witness: The Pre-Prometheus Alien-Predator Marathon You Wish You’d Attended [Video]

Since it had been over 30 years since Ridley Scott made a movie in the Alien franchise, which was later joined in unholy matrimony with the Predator franchise, a pre-Prometheus marathon of all those movies was in order, as well as an exercise in perspective. And that is just what Brad Hansen (creator of The Lion King Rises) and his fiancée Athena Stamos did. Complete with ratings and a final trip for 35 to the Hollywood Cinerama Dome, their marathon takes place in time lapse in the video above.

Impressive, but how about a Lord of the Rings/J.R.R. Tolkien marathon ahead of The Hobbit? Do you accept this challenge?

Wait, *all* of them? Even the AvP movies? That’s hardcore.. :/

The Fantasy Literature class at my university has done the LOTR marathon (extended/director’s cut versions) every.single.year since they came out. Takes them about 10 hours. They also read all three books in the LOTR series during the 3 month course, plus usually 3 or 4 other books. When I took the course we read, besides LOTR 1-3, a collection called “Tales Before Tolkien,” “The Summer Tree” by Guy Gavriel Kay, and “Spirits in the Wires” by Charles de Lint. The Silmarillion was optional reading.

I’m just saying, it’s not much of a challenge.

A movie marathon in a house is one thing. Doing them in a theater is another thing.

I recall a theater in NJ did a Star Wars trilogy marathon back in the mid-80s, well before Lucasfilm started Specialling the films.  They had the Making Of specials from TV and everything.

And oh, the callouts were awesome.  By the third film, the whole theater was following up “A Long time ago in a galaxy far far away” with “HOW LONG WAS IT?”

Gutsy.  My favorite part was the Just Kill Me sign. A lot of crappy sequals in there…

Sounds like a fun marathon… except for AVP :( I was surprised that Predators got better reviews than the visually stunning, thought provoking Prometheus. Challenge accepted for the LOTR marathon. I had one last year during Labor Day with a bunch of dudes, and the inappropriate gay jokes were piling up during the Return of the King.

I want to take that course… Did you guys read any Robert E. Howard?

What an awesome idea. Love the time lapse and the ratings after each movie. The next obvious candidate would be the Batman movies– and I’m talking about every Batman movie released theatrically– Batman 1966, Batman 1989, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

That was actually one of Athena and Brad’s earlier marathons (I’ve made at least a token appearance at all of them). They did the entire list you mentioned, plus Mask of the Phantasm, which was also theatrically released.

The most hardcore marathon though was the first one, James Bond. That one took three days.

I’ve already taken on that Tolkien challenge (more or less). I’ve reread The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, watched all three extended edition movies, and played lots of Lord of the Rings Online. Granted, this was spaced out over several months. I’m a hardcore fan but I’m not made of free time here.

Batathon was actually our second marathon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsnnAoKR6Xg …though now I wish we would have saved it till the weekend Dark Knight Rises comes out. BUT we were way too excited to wait. :)

Wow ten movie marathon is not for the feint of heart, or butt.

Oh god do not suggest a LOTR marathon to my husband! He’d probably pull some kind of Troy and Abed style “let’s watch the original movie, then director’s cut, then director’s cut commentary then original for cool down” for some kind of epic 48 hour spree.
