A Room Built For Snape

This is just like magic!

Severus Snape is one of those Harry Potter character who’s easy to obsess over. Even before we learned of his interesting past in the books, fans were swooning over the greasy-haired Hogwarts teacher. Well one fan has taken her love of Professor Snape to another level and devoted a good chunk of her living space to the potions master. Feast your eyes on this.

Logospilgrim has written about Snape often including the essay, The Severus Snape Paradigm: Outcast, Rebel, Hero. She also cosplays as the character frequently, has a Snape tattoo and her living space, nicknamed “the dungeon” is apparently something of legend. The editor of Offbeat Home asked Logospilgrim to document it for the world to see and she oblidged. We are very thankful.

“Eight years ago, I moved into my current home. That was when I began putting together my unusual office, a small space filled to bursting with books, curiosities and Professor Snape collectibles,” she writes. “My goal from the start was to create something special, a place where I could devote myself to my vocation and loved ones: a place to write my books, answer letters, ponder, rest, and work my magic — that is, deepen my understanding of the world as a manifestation of everlasting love.”

Logospilgrim desribes the space as a mix of the Addams Family mansion and Pee Wee’s Playhouse and says she’s slowly built up her collection. “A set of jars here, a couple of rubber snakes there, cockroaches, a heart, spiders, eyeballs, shells, stones, herbs, crystals… Most of what I have collected has been rather inexpensive.”

Of course there are a few choice Harry Potter movie products hanging around as well.

“Countless friends have added their touch to the room. I have been sent amazing objects from all over the world — tokens of love which contribute to the quirky and cozy tranquility I have been repeatedly told that my refuge exudes,” she writes, adding that these are some of her most precious items.

“I think of the room as a collage of sorts, a work of art, a sanctuary. I love arranging objects in an aesthetically pleasing manner, and finding ways to cram yet more of them in every nook and cranny,” she writes. “I love jars, and bugs, and memento mori… I love things that belong to a more genteel age: quills, ink wells, hourglasses, Oriental carpets.”

My own room has a similar feel yet is just a portion of the kind of things seen here so I’m quite impressed by all Logospilgrim has arranged and amassed. Though I’m having quite a fun time imagining Snape with a stuffed Bert on his bed.
